Briana Kaufmann is a self-taught artist, immersed in making sculpture. She has worked with recycled silverware and found and new metals for twenty years. She is known particulary for her totemic spoon rattles and highly unique, whimsical, wearable, and well crafted face pins. Briana has displayed in many museum shops, galleries, and craftshows.
Folk artist Briana Kaufmann’s kitchen is a whirlwind of activity. It is the place of emergence for a new pantheon of unusual beings. Spoons and forks are the stuff of most women’s lives, linking them traditionally to the domestic spheres, to food, to feeding, to care taking. Here is where Briana implements change. The ordinary become extraordinary. Basic familiar objects become base materials for recreation. Kitchen utensils become new symbols of mystic nourishment and Briana, herself, is evidence of women’s creative and transformative powers. The process of recycling, coupled with the capacity to re-envision her world, has blown open a distinct pathway for feminist artist, Briana Kaufmann. “I wanted to create objects that had mythic meaning. I wanted them to embody whimsy. And I wanted this art form to be economically viable.” She found the means at her fingertips.
Briana Kaufmann uses many of the silverplated spoons she finds at garage sales, flea markets, and scrap metal yards to make her unusual musical and magical instruments. She incorporates new brass bells, silver or brass beads, scrap copper, metal charms and meaningful themes, and weaves them together in the unique caldron that is her creativity. All spoons are silver plated and vary in age and pattern and all are hand-hammered flat. All rattles have a copper link on the back so they may be displayed on the wall.
